The Caribs

Lloyd Dewar (PBS 106.7fm) approached me in February 2010 with a proposition: to continue a documentary project that he had started but could not finish. At first this meant to take on the role of editor and find a structure for a series of interviews that he himself had shot. The interviews take place in Kingston (Jamaica), Atlanta (USA), New York (USA) and Melbourne and tell the story of Australian R’n’B group The Caribs and music producer and engineer Graeme Goodall. However, as the interviews do not constitute a film, my role has evolved.

In 1958 The Caribs left their residency at “The Paradise Hotel” in Surfers Paradise to take up a gig at The Glassbucket Club in Kingston Jamaica. They had intended to stay for 6 months but stayed for 6 years.

Also in Kingston at the time was a Melbourne man named Graeme Goodall. “Goody” (as he was known) from the mid-1950’s through to the early 1970’s was a founder and cornerstone of the Jamaican record business. These guys all became friends, recorded and played on a prolific amount of early foundational Jamaican Ska and R’n’B records and for the most part, never returned to Australia.

An extract from this documentary project is available: Caribs Capers - an extract (QuickTime, 56MB).
